Unless you are going for a specific, quirky effect, the car that you are photographing should be as clean as possible. This will make your photographs instantly look more presentable and professional and you can get some cool effects when there are interesting reflections and lighting situations. Most cars look their best when they are clean, so get scrubbing and then any photographs you take will make the effort well worth it. What really helps is having some cleaning equipment along with you like tissues, sponges,  and some water.

To begin a photo shoot with any type of car, move it to an interesting location that will add something to the photograph. Be careful when driving to dangerous and relatively “out-of-reach” locations. Make sure you can be found if something bad should happen like the car breaking down, or worse, an accident. So, so make sure that you or the car is insured appropriately with someone like RAC, you can drive it to your ideal photographing location and get cracking. Make sure you’re either close to the “magic hour” which is either sunrise or sundown. And of course pitch black for lightpainting. I am not a great fan of natural light but it is often the best tool to use in your photographs and it will give you different effects at different times of the day.

Of course you will want to take some conventional, head-on photographs of the car, however why not also play around with the angles and perspective. This will add interest to the images produced and will show the car in a whole new light. It can be really fun to experiment with the amount of the vehicle that you show in the shot as well. For example, try only taking a few shots of the wing mirrors or the headlights and you will find that you create some really unique work.
